MG Motor India has commenced the production of its upcoming electric vehicle (EV), the MG Comet EV, in Halol, Gujarat. The carmaker has also started taking bookings for the car ahead of its debut on April 19. The first unit of the mini-EV has already rolled out of the plant, and the company has teased its cabin design, revealing some of the dashboard features.
MG Comet EV Smallest EV on Offer in India
Although the technical details of the India-spec MG Comet EV are still scarce, it is known that the car will be one of the smallest EVs on offer in India. The car measures only 2,974mm in length and 1,505mm in width, making it ideal for tight and congested urban spaces. It is based on the Wuling Air EV sold in Indonesia and is built on MG’s GSEV platform.
The MG Comet EV may be a small electric urban runabout, but it will be equipped with modern creature comforts. The carmaker has teased dual 10.25-inch screens for the infotainment system and instrumentation, auto AC, connected car technology, and steering-mounted controls. Other features that may be included are Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and a parking camera.
International Markets Get Two Range Options
In international markets, the Comet EV is available in two variants with battery capacities of 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh. Both trims feature a 41PS e-motor, but the one with the bigger battery pack boasts a claimed range of up to 300km. However, the technical details of the India-spec model are yet to be revealed.
The price of the Comet EV in India is expected to range between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be a smaller alternative to electric hatchbacks like the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3.
The MG Comet EV is a highly anticipated car in the Indian market, especially for those who are looking for a small, affordable, and eco-friendly car. The car’s compact design and modern features make it a great option for city dwellers who need to navigate through tight spaces. With the production of the first unit already underway, it will be interesting to see how well the car performs in the Indian market.
